Two names for the same body of water

Lake Caramany and Lake Agly are names for the same reservoir, shared by Caramany, Cassagnes, Ansignan and Trilla. It owes its existence to the dam built on the Agly. Caramany's town hall dates its filling to 1994.

The dam helps limit floods and maintain the river's flow during low-water periods. The reservoir's level therefore varies throughout the year. A photograph captures one moment: depending on when you visit, the water may be further from the trails, exposing more of the banks.

Walk to change your perspective

From the l'Horto rest area in Caramany, the lake trail alternates between vineyards and woodland. The Department gives around four hours' walking for this route, which covers much of the lake's perimeter. Plan it as a hike, allowing enough time for the return.

For a shorter outing, the bird trail starts near Ansignan's old mill. This three-kilometre loop has information boards and passes the aqueduct. Its starting point is in Ansignan, not in the village of Caramany.

Choose your outing to suit the terrain, weather and your own pace.

Pause beside the landscape

A lake visit can also be just a short stop. The Department lists picnic areas below Caramany's cooperative winery and near Ansignan's old mill. They let you combine a lakeside pause with exploring the nearby villages.

Use a designated area, take your rubbish with you and keep access routes clear. To continue your day, return to Caramany's narrow streets or plan another walk nearby.

Can you swim in Lake Caramany?

The Department's brochure states that swimming is prohibited. This document was published in 2021 and put online in 2022. For the conditions on the day of your visit, check the posted instructions and information from the managing authority.

Fishing from a boat has specific rules: these do not imply that paddleboarding, kayaking or other water activities are allowed. Before planning to launch a craft, ask the Department for information.

Prepare your fishing trip before arriving

The Fédération Pêche 66 describes the lake as a fishing site for predatory fish, including pike, zander and perch. It also documents night carp fishing areas and rules for fishing from a boat.

Consult its Agly reservoir information page and the current year's regulations to check seasons, areas, equipment and requirements for your activity. Access to launching ramps also depends on site conditions and the water level.

Choose an access point rather than following the shore at random

The Department lists several parking options: on the Caramany side, near the cooperative winery and l'Horto; on the Ansignan side, near the mill and bridge; and at the dam. Choose your arrival point according to the walk you have planned.

Before setting off, check any local restrictions and bring water, sun protection and suitable footwear. Follow the signs on site for trails and accessible areas.
