Caramany, a name that defines the origin

The Caramany designation was recognised in 1977 within Côtes du Roussillon Villages. It applies exclusively to red wines. Look for the full wording “Côtes du Roussillon Villages Caramany” on the bottle.

Where you buy a wine does not determine its appellation. A white, rosé or another red sold in the village may have a different designation. The label distinguishes the stated origin, cuvée name and vintage.

One name, several expressions

Vins du Roussillon's descriptions outline a broad range: some reds emphasise fruit and a supple palate; others are more concentrated, with notes of dark fruit, spice or Mediterranean scrubland.

These descriptions offer starting points. Vintage, blend and ageing distinguish the cuvées. Rather than seeking a single Caramany taste, compare the wines on offer and explain what you enjoy: freshness, gentle tannins or a fuller palate.

A technique that shaped the winery

Carbonic maceration plays an important role in Caramany's wine history. The municipality dates the cooperative's quality initiative to 1966, linked to experiments with this process. The AOC Languedoc wine producers' association highlights its use for Carignan in this designation.

During a tasting, ask how the grapes for the cuvée were vinified and whether the wine was then aged in tank or barrel. The producer's explanation connects what you taste with the choices made at the winery.

Stop at Les Vignerons de Caramany

The Les Vignerons de Caramany winery is at 70 Grand'rue, 66720 Caramany. You can call on 04 68 84 51 80 or visit its official website to plan your visit.

Contact the winery to confirm opening hours, tasting arrangements and group visits. If you would like to see the facilities or meet a winemaker, mention this when enquiring: an open shop does not mean a tour is available.

Choose a bottle for the right occasion

Start with the occasion: a planned meal, a gift or a wine to keep. Give your budget and preferences, then ask which cuvée and vintage match what you have in mind.

For food pairing, describe the dish and how it is prepared, especially sauces or spices. Before leaving, ask about serving temperature, whether to open the bottle in advance and storage conditions. Advice is more useful when it relates to the bottle you have chosen.
