The lake trail, for half a day outdoors

Start: l'Horto rest area, Caramany. Departmental guide figures: 12 km, 280 m elevation gain and around 4 hours' walking.

The route combines vineyards, woodland and views over the Agly. Information boards also introduce the history of settlements discovered before the reservoir was filled. Despite its name, the trail covers much of the lake's perimeter: follow the official route rather than trying to stay beside the water throughout.

In Ansignan, let curiosity lead the way

Start: near Ansignan's old mill. Departmental guide figures: 3 km, 25 m elevation gain and around 1 hour's walking.

The bird trail is a loop with information boards and a section passing the aqueduct. Allow extra time to watch and read. The starting point is in Ansignan, near Caramany.

Towards the dolmens, up to higher ground

Start: rest area on the RD 9, after the bridge over the Agly when coming from Rasiguères, before Ansignan. Departmental guide figures: around 9 km, 386 m elevation gain and 3 hours' walking.

This route leads to the dolmens near Trilla and an orientation table. It involves more climbing than the two previous routes.

Choose your route before putting on your walking shoes

For a short outing, the bird trail is the shortest of these three options. For half a day around the water, consider the lake trail. If you want more climbing and a chance to see the dolmens, look at the third route description.

These comparisons do not replace a description of the terrain. Download the maps provided by the Department and check the exact starting point. The figures used here come from its web page consulted on 7 September 2026; older brochures may give different measurements.

If you are walking with children or someone with specific mobility needs, check the trail's features before choosing. A short distance does not guarantee that a route is suitable for a pushchair or wheelchair.

At Galamus, find the Agly between the cliffs

Near Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, the Galamus gorges offer another view of the river: the Agly flows through a limestone ravine. The Saint-Antoine hermitage, built into the rock face, can add to your visit, depending on opening arrangements.

Plan this excursion separately from the lake trails. The tourist office states that buses and motorhomes are not allowed to drive through the gorges. As the road is narrow, check traffic and parking arrangements before visiting.

Leave time for the return journey

Add breaks, photo stops and travel to the starting point to the stated walking times. Bring water, sun protection, suitable footwear and a route map. Check the weather and access restrictions before setting out, then follow the waymarks and signs on site.
